Late that night, I stared at the ceiling in my room. I had never cared much for anyone outside my family, and now I felt my heart pulled in two very different directions. I only wished I knew which path to take.

Chapter 18

“Why Lady Elenora, I am so glad to see that the dress is such a magnificent fit on you,” Ilana said as she poured the tea.

“You were too kind to gift it to me,” I said through gritted teeth as I tried to subtly scratch at the itchy material. I had been at the palace for several weeks, yet it seemed I was still to be made a fool of. The thick woolen sleeves constricted my movements, and the dress, maybe ideal for icy Glavnadian winters, was already making me sweat in the warm spring sunshine.

Lady Ilana had prepared a tea party and invited me, along with Constance, Flora and a dozen other ladies of the court. Yesterday, a messenger had delivered a large wrapped parcel. Unwrapping it, I discovered a thick brown woolen tunic and skirt, richly embroidered with green and yellow flowers. Along with the bulky garment, there had been a note, sealed with blue wax stamped with a shooting star. I broke the seal, even more surprised with the note than the gift.
